I was in Masjid India yesterday for some shopping. I had a few things to buy in my list i.e, a few batik caftans and a telekung. Since it was still the CNY holiday, we decided to just take the LRT train straight to Masjid Jamek.
I do shop at Masjid India occasionally especially when the kakak needs to get her tudungs and what not. Anyway, while I was infront of a shop at Wisma Yakin, kakak tapped me on the back and said “adik, kita berhenti kat sini aje”. She gave me this alarming and worried look. I quickly went into the shop. She told me about a guy who was following me for about 100 meters or so. And she said the guy pretended to look around for something whenever I stopped to look and check out some stuff. She was suspicious of the guy and she noticed his weird actions as she was walking a few steps behind him. He probably did not know that she was with me, as we normally walk a few meters apart from each other..hehe!
As soon as I heard her story, we decided to plan our strategies and run as fast as we can. As soon as he looked away, both us just ran and used the path along the bazaar where there were stream of people. I was sure he could not detect us as we were among the massive crowd. Pheeeww!
That incident made me think again about Masjid India and its surroundings. I bet the mystery man was probably trying to find a way to snatch my handbag etc. Well, he must have had bad intentions to follow me in that way…I am thankful, nothing bad happened to me. Well, luckily, I had kakak to accompany me as well. Syukur, Alhamdulillah. I guess if you ever decide to go to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman or Masjid India, never go alone eh.

adoi, lucky for you nothing unfortunate happens. i go to masjid india to shop fo kaftans selalunya, and jarang le pergi sendiri...kot2 dia punya intention tu lain kot nour...kot terpikat ke ...hahaha mama ni buat joke pulak. but be careful bila jalan sorang2, ni KL macam2 boleh jadi
i kalau pergi those kind of places memang paranoid semacam. but better to be safe than sorry kan... thank god your friend was observant. takut jugak eh. scary la sekarang... everywhere pun unsafe... even kat rumah sendiri pun boleh unsafe jugak hmmm....
yep... lotsa ppl were snatched nearby wisma yakin.
Light (Nour) I think you ladies should be aware of the surroundings when u shop at places like Masjid India or PS. Yeah bad things can happen...
My advice, is if that happens again, and your sis is not around, go straight to the nearest uniform policeman or DBKL enforcement officer, and tell them your concern.
But... I think that guy was simply smothered by you.... maybe he had a crush on you....?
ahhhh...this reminds me of the time I was in KL...
I woke up early in the morning and after bfast at the hotel, I thought a walk would do me good and also I'd get the morning newspapers and some magazines...
I landed walking in Petaling St...of coz I browsed around altho there was nuthing much to see...then I saw this guy staring at me and he looked vicious!
something told me I was in danger and he followed me even to the newsstand..
I hurriedly walked back to the hotel and swore never to do what I did..it was a scary experience Nour!
hi nour!
i think kl is becoming more and more unsafe over the past few years...my handbag was snatched once right out of my doorstep! how about that?:-P
anyway, u be careful alwiz, girl! i think the best prevention for such crimes is to always be alert 24-7!
hi nour!
you've been tagged by me (pls. read my blog)! hope you don't mind!he!he!
have a nice day!
babe,
NEVER carry a handbag there. i love to go to the area just for jalan2 whenever i m up in KL, but i always make sure i had on a sling back (all solo backpackers would agree with me), and hold on to my pepper spray... and always2 walk where the crowds are.
glad you are ok though.. :)
hey... i love your template! it's so sweet and soothing.
Hi Nour,
You were lucky indeed.
My sis suffered a bad incident, yeah, snatch theft. Someone on the bike grabbed her handbag. She was dragged for a bit. In retrospect she said, she just completely forgot to let go of the bag. Her instincts made her cling to her bag. She regretted that action. After that bad incident, she advised everyone to just let go of the bag. Life is more important. Now, that's a sound advice.
there r crazy people everywhere. but dont let them stop you from having fun.
Nour...new name, new face..follow my lead oke...
mama,
Hmm, nak kata terpikat tu, seram mendengarnye..I rasa dia ada intention tak baik kot, tengah tunggu mangsa nak diragutnye.. But it could be my handbag..coz I did not wear any jewelleries yang besar or tebal yang boleh tempt dia pun. Moral behind the story never go alone and always remind yourself to be observant and alert. The problem with me is bila dah jalan tu tak pandang kiri kanan, laju je jalan.
Beskot,
Thank god I had someone to accompany me. Knowing me, I would probably have not realized the mystery and scary man. Sekarang ni mana2 pun tak safe. Just a few days ago, someone stole our bibiq’s black pants hanging at the porch. The thought of someone entering the porch compound just gives us the creeps.
Azer,
Yeah, my sister told me it was reported in the papers. It seems it happened a couple of times. Scary!
DG,
No matter how careful we are, some things just happen sometimes. I learnt my lesson, never to bring my handbag with me to Masjid India. Oh when you mentioned about the uniform police or DBKL personnel....I don’t remember seeing any of them in the Masjid India area. Sigh!
Hmm, on him having a crush on me......naaaahhla..:D (He might had a massive crush on my handbag though..heheh
Blackfeline,
I TOTALLY agree with you that Petaling Street is not the place to be walking on your own. The people hanging around that area can be very mean and nasty. Even in living daylight when I happened to walk pass that area, I feel the creeps. Foreign tourists have complained many times about how nasty the vendors can be if you don’t buy their stuff. The vendors do not like the idea of people negotiating with them for good deals and decides later not to buy. Thank GOD you just walked away as fast as you could. Never go there alone.
Elly,
Hey girl! Scary eh…my mom came back from pasar malam one day and was reaching the house gate when someone just grabbed her purse and fled. Just like what you went thru, you must be traumatized. Yup, it is definitely unsafe now as compared to when we were kids kan?
True, we need to be on the alert 24-7, and try to avoid going home late especially after work.
BTW, read yr blog, will try my best with the tagging bit.
Sarclover,
Hey girl,
Yeah, you are right, I should have not brought my handbag with me (BIG MISTAKE). I was too lazy to transfer my things to another casual bag. I bring my pepper spray with me all the time too. What worries me though is if I am ever in need of that spray, will I ever get to find it in time as my handbag is always cluttered with things...:)
Beskot,
Hey thanks, was bored of the when I am sad I eat cookies's template ..
hehehe :D
Hi Ruby,
Oh gosh, it must have been very traumatizing for your sis. Imagine, after being dragged and with her clinging on to her handbag. Thank God she is fine eh!
Once when a guy on a bike tried to grab my lil sister’s handbag while she was walking, she too spontaneously grabbed the bag back, it was like the tug of war, the guy went off balance and he had no choice but to leave. My sis fell and got a few small bruises and tore her skirt, my dad who was walking next to her was speechless for a few minutes. Just like your sis, my sis said it was a spontaneous act and all she could think of was her bag and the things inside. But then again, if you are not lucky, the dragging could lead to many unfortunate consequences. So the best advice I would also agree is to just let go. Yup, you are so right, life is more important.
merapuman,
Yeah, dont forget to always have fun but no harm in being extra cautious and careful.. There are amny crazy people out there. Be careful ya folks!
Ice,
Cool..new name and new add...nice!
