Real sparks!!

I am not talking about the chemistry or sparks between two people but the actual sparks you see from cables or wires. The sparks I saw came with a few small explosions and smoke. My family and I did not have a good sleep last night, many thanks to the neighbour. :D. Well, I don’t blame my neighbour, Mr Chew, as it’s obviously not his fault. Til now we have yet to ascertain the cause, it could be an overloading, overfused etc??
It all happened at 2.20am, when all of us were in slumberland....I was not sure the loud “thump” I heard was from my nightmare or was it for real. It got me all tensed up and again I heard it…..my mind was telling me could it be a gun shot??? I woke my sis up and we both looked for the source of the loud sound. Then came the explosions, repeatedly and we saw loose wires with sparks. Something was definitely burning. The smoke was never ending. It came from a neighbour, two houses away. My sister woke my dad up and we decided to go over to Mr Chew’s house to help.

A few others were already there, pretty geared to find out what was happening. Mr Chew’s house by then was full with smoke and part of his walls turned into charcoal black. That very incident led to the “black-out” of our house and a few others. We could not ascertain the cause of it and everyone rushed to call the TNB operator. It took me a whole five minutes to get through and fortunately the call centre was there to assist. They sent a technician over to help, but the help only came after 30 minutes. I wonder whether it would make a difference to them if someone was hurt?? Would the assistance be better, ASAP??

Well, this is one of the issues that the government and the people should consider looking into. The technician checked and realized that he needed more help and finally the electricity was back to normal very early in the morning. By then, I was already very wide awake but too tired for anything.

We were LUCKY, no one was hurt and no major loss, however we noted the following:-
1. No big fire was involved - or it would just spread and wipe out the whole neighbourhood.
2. Many people were up due to the World Cup live match at 3 am (Yes!!)
3. TNB call centre was there to help
4. Responsible and helpful neighbours. I saw two neighbours running out of their houses straight to Mr Chew’s to help without even pausing for a second.
5. We had a hand-fan to help ease my little niece’s uneasiness due to the smoke and humidity.

Moral of the story, you will never know when it will hit you bad, so be nice
to you neighbours!

Thank GOD she was awake only for a shortwhile..and she was practically snoring even without the electricity..looks like she is one tough little chiwawa. I for one was wide awake the whole night and was cursing tnb for the delay!

you're rite, always be nice to our neighbors. when something like this happens, neighbors will come to help you first before your relatives could even get there.

wow.. that was pretty scary. Luckily, no one got hurt. Must be some kind of wiring mishap. A couple of years ago, a friend's house got burnt down cos of this wiring thingy.. apparently, u have to check and redo the wiring every 20-25 years or somethg like that.

GravtKills,
I was lucky that morning. On other days , normally my calls would be answered after a few attempts. OOh and nowadays if you don't get thru after a few rings, your call will be answered by a machine automatically. You are then required to leave your name and number. hmmmm I wonder will they ever return the calls...:P

liza,
yeah it doesn't take that much to be nice to the neighbours, a smile would do sometimes.

shakiraz,
that is so true, rumah lama2 memang kena tukar wiring. But this particular neighbour's house has been through several renovations..I have even lost count. Hopefully the owner takes it seriously and according to him, this is the second incident. Yiikkess...

That happened to me once. The fuse box at our house blew up and there were sparks and a little fire. That was the first time I dialled 999 and I had run to the neighbour's house to use their phone because our phone didn't work. TNB came soon after but man I really panicked as there was only mum and me at home but mum was so calm... I panicked! :)

SS,
That must be scary, it musthave been tough to be caught in a situation where you need to react fast and at the same time not panic and have a clear mind. Well, you just have to take charge sometimes la kan?

Adorable,
